![]() Concept & Engineered DesignOur design solutions are certified by on Staff Professional Engineers to comply with all applicable regulatory codes and established engineering standards for mechanical, electrical and structural elements.Engineering StandardsELS designs its equipment to rigorous criteria, which includes but is not limited to the following:National Building Code of Canada Canadian Electrical Code Steel Design Code (CSA S16.1) CMAA #74 -Specification for Top Running & Under Running Single Girder Electric Traveling Cranes Utilizing Under Running Hoists CMAA #70 -Specification for Top Running Bridge & Gantry Type Multiple Girder Electric Overhead Traveling Cranes Occupational Health and Safety Act (O. Reg. 851) for Industrial Establishments Welded Steel Construction Code (CWB W59) OtherWe have the capability to do Finite Element Analysis (FEO) when required to aid in our design of overhead material handling equipment.![]() Load Testing & Equipment CertificationDetermining and Verifying Material Handling Equipment Lifting CapabilitiesOverviewA load test is a physical proof test of a lifting device. A lifting device is subjected to a load of up to 125% of its rated capacity to verify its structural and mechanical integrity. After the load is released, the lifting device is visually inspected for deformation, cracks or other defects. A report of the load test is provided and stamped by a Professional Engineer.Equipment CertificationTypically, this is a general arrangement drawing of a lifting device, with its capacity, is stamped by a Professional Engineer verifying its structural adequacy and compliance with any applicable codes and/or standards.More InfoWhen should a Load Test be done? After installation of new equipment. Also, it should be done after a piece of equipment has had major overhaul or modification. Who can perform Load Testing? A Load Test needs to be done by a qualified person, usually a Professional Engineer. ![]() Pre-Start Health & Safety Reviews (PSHSR/PSR)Engineering is our StrengthWhat is a PSHSR or PSR?A Pre-start Health and Safety Review (often abreviated to PSR) is a specific audit of a process or piece of equipment and the interaction with its surrounding environment. The review seeks to identify safety concerns and evaluate potential hazards. It also defines what measures need to be taken to bring the identified deficiencies into compliance. The results of the PSR are presented to management and the Joint Health and Safety Committee and are used to establish an action plan for the implementation of the measures. Why do a PSR?It’s required by law! As of October 2000, a Pre-start Health and Safety Review must be performed on any new, modified or relocated equipment, or equipment which has been moved into a new workplace or where a safety control has been added or modified. This is a requirement of the Ontario Health and Safety Act Reg 851 section 7. Failure to comply with this law results in fines.Who Can Perform a PSR?PSR’s must be performed by a professional engineer registered in the Province of Ontario. It is strongly recommended that PSR’s be assigned to persons who are competent by virtue of education and experience in the respective discipline that the PSR entails. Firms that offer engineering services, including those who perform PSR’s, must hold a Certificate of Authorization issued by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).What are the Benefits of Doing a PSR?The PSR process identifies safety issues to be corrected in an organized and effective manner. Potential cost savings can result through work efficiencies and proper installation and placement of equipment. Employee morale and respect for management is built when they realize their employer is being pro-active towards providing a safer work environment. Certainly, a safer operation reduces the risk of injuries, lost time and offers potential lower insurance premiums by preventing worker injuries. |
